Flaxseed is recognized as a highly nutritious food source. The hulls of the flaxseed, (outer shells) have fiber, lignans and antioxidants. There is no oil in the hulls. The oil comes from the embryo of the flaxseed. The hulls are also known as bran and they have 20 times more lignans than whole flaxseed. Lignans are phytonutrients that when ingested in the body form enterodial and enterolactone which are two mammalian lignan precursors that mimic estrogen. In dogs these phytoestrogens act to block aromatase enzyme activity. The University of Tennessee has done a study that indicates that flaxseed lignans and melatonin should be considered as a possible treatment when Cushings disease or Atypical Cushings disease is present. Even if symptoms are present but blood diagnosis has not been performed and verified, the flaxseed hulls are a natural food source and are safe to give even to healthy dogs. They are high in fiber and help with digestion. We give them to our Bichon who does not have Cushings but we give it to her to hopefully prevent it.
