Hair Growth

Hair loss can be a natural part of the aging process. But while it can affect both sexes, the condition is more common in men. It is estimated that two-thirds of men experience some degree of hair loss by age 35. It typically starts with the thinning of the hair, which may lead to bald spots or hairline reduction. The most common form of male pattern baldness, known as androgenic alopecia (AGA), is linked to genetics but can also result from hormonal imbalances.

Products made from flaxseed have shown promise as a natural way of preventing and treating hair loss. Flaxseed is the richest source of plant lignans. The omega-3 fatty acids in lignans can help strengthen hair, nourish the scalp, and promote hair regrowth.

The Relationship Between Lignans and Hair Growth

Hair loss can be caused by a potent form of the male testosterone hormone, Dihydrotestosterone or DHT. Men have two androgens: testosterone and DHT. In a male adolescent, DHT is critical in developing the male sexual organs. However, over time, DHT accumulates in the prostate as well as in the hair follicles. DHT can cause the hair follicles to produce thinner hair or none at all. When a man goes bald, his hair follicles are not dead; they are just dormant.

  • Studies on lignans and hair growth indicate that people with high amounts of lignans in their bodies have a reduced rate of hair loss, while others have shown hair regeneration after taking lignans. Flaxseed lignans can inhibit the production of the enzyme that converts testosterone into DHT, and over time, the DHT levels can drop, and hair may start to grow back.

One Asian study on ten men with varying degrees of AGA over six months showed significant improvement in hair growth after integrating lignans into their diet. Throughout the research, the subjects saw a decline in daily hair loss; half also noticed a decrease in scalp oil production. The improvements were more pronounced in subjects with more severe cases of AGA.

  • Our customers have also reported excellent hair growth after consistently using lignan supplements for several months. Moreover, one of the first symptoms to improve when treating dogs for Cushing’s disease with flax hull lignans is hair growth.

Many people prefer natural alternatives to hair loss treatment, like flax lignans supplements, because they are less likely to have side effects. Moreover, the benefits of lignans go far beyond mitigating hormone-related hair loss. They also help promote prostate, breast, and heart health and reduce menopausal symptoms in women.
